Medvedev

Mallorca, 23 de junio de 2022. Roberto Bautista protagonizó el gran triunfo de la jornada del jueves en el Mallorca Championships. El español eliminó al No.1 mundial y vigente campeón Daniil Medvedev y se clasificó para las semifinales. Le acompañan en la penúltima ronda Stefanos Tsitsipas, Benjamin Bonzi y Antoine Bellier. 

El No.20 impidió que Medvedev siguiera su camino en el único torneo ATP sobre hierba que se disputa en el sur de Europa hacia la tercera final consecutiva sobre hierba. Bautista se tomó la revancha de la derrota sufrida la semana pasada en Halle ante la primera raqueta mundial (6-3, 6-2). El quinto cabeza de serie del cuadro mejora los cuartos de final de la primera edición, evitando que su rival pueda revalidar el título, para medirse ahora a Bellier. El suizo se impuso al neerlandés Tallon Griekspoor (5-7, 7-6[5], 6-2). 

Tsitsipas, segundo preclasificado, logró una trabajada victoria frente a Marcos Giron. El griego necesitó dos horas y 33 minutos para deshacerse del estadounidense (7-6[5], 4-6, 6-3) y seguir distanciándose como tenista con más triunfos este curso en el circuito (38), por delante de Carlos Alcaraz (32). El No.6 busca su noveno título en el Mallorca Country Club y, para ello, su siguiente obstáculo será Benjamin Bonzi. El francés derrotó al alemán Daniel Altmaier (6-3, 6-4) para alcanzar sus segundas semifinales del año después de hacerlo en Marsella. 

Dobles 

Ariel Behar y Gonzalo Escobar son los primeros finalistas del cuadro de dobles. El uruguayo y el ecuatoriano doblegaron al australiano Matthew Ebden y al austriaco Philipp Oswald (6-4, 6-2). La dupla latinoamericana buscará su cuarto título en cuatro finales disputadas hasta la fecha desde Delray Beach y Marbella (2021) además de Belgrado (2022). 

Por otro lado, quedó definida la segunda semifinal. La pareja formada por Marcelo Arévalo y Jean-Julien Rojer se medirá a Rafael Matos y David Vega. El salvadoreño y el neerlandés, primeros cabezas de serie, se impusieron a los austriacos Alexander Erler y Lucar Miedler (6-1, 6-4). Por su parte, el brasileño y el español remontaron frente a Aslan Karatsev y el belga Joran Vliegen (3-6, 7-6[3], 10-5).

Bautista downs No.1 and defending champion

Mallorca, 23rd June 2022. Roberto Bautista starred in Thursday’s big win at the Mallorca
Championships. The Spaniard eliminated world No.1 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev and qualified for the semifinals. He is joined in the penultimate round by Stefanos Tsitsipas, Benjamin Bonzi and Antoine Bellier.
The No.20 prevented Medvedev from continuing his run at the only ATP grass-court tournament in
southern Europe to a third consecutive grass-court final. Bautista avenged last week’s 6-3, 6-2 loss to the world No. 1 in Halle. The fifth seed of the draw improves the quarter-finals of the first edition, preventing his rival from revalidating the title, to now face Bellier. The Swiss beat Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands (5-7, 7-6[5], 6-2).

Tsitsipas, the second seed, achieved a hard-fought victory over Marcos Giron. The Greek needed two hours and 33 minutes to get rid of the American (7-6[5], 4-6, 6-3) and continue to distance himself as the player with the most wins this year in the circuit (38), ahead of Carlos Alcaraz (32). The No.6 is looking for his ninth title at the Mallorca Country Club and, to do so, his next obstacle will be Benjamin Bonzi. The Frenchman defeated German Daniel Altmaier (6-3, 6-4) to reach his second semifinals of the year after doing so in Marseille.

Doubles

Ariel Behar and Gonzalo Escobar are the first finalists in the doubles draw. The Uruguayan and the
Ecuadorian defeated Australian Matthew Ebden and Austrian Philipp Oswald (6-4, 6-2). The Latin
American duo will be looking for their fourth title in four finals played so far since Delray Beach and Marbella (2021) as well as Belgrade (2022).

On the other hand, the second semifinal was defined. The pair formed by Marcelo Arevalo and Jean- Julien Rojer will face Rafael Matos and David Vega. The Salvadoran and the Dutchman, top seeds, defeated the Austrians Alexander Erler and Lucar Miedler (6-1, 6-4). The Brazilian and the Spaniard came from behind against Aslan Karatsev and Belgian Joran Vliegen (3-6, 7-6[3], 10-5).
